Guwahati: Transport, Excise and Fisheries Minister Parimal Suklabaidya on Wednesday urged the Union Minister for Fisheries to establish an export promotion unit in the state for facilitating trade with South-East Asian countries during the ongoing National Fish Farmers Day Meet 2023, at Mahamallipuram, Chennai.

Union Minister Parshottam Rupala and MoS Dr L Murugan were also present at the event, along with fisheries ministers from other states.

In his keynote address, Suklabaidya highlighted the initiatives taken by Assam to support fishermen dependent on the riverine fishery for their livelihood. He requested central assistance for these initiatives. Additionally, he urged Rupala to approve the establishment of a National Institute of Fisheries in Assam, focused on research and fisheries development.

Suklabaidya concluded his address by expressing the need for an exclusive Fisheries Policy for the northeastern states, to be implemented by the Ministry of Fisheries.

During the event, Rupala announced the formation of a national high-powered committee, chaired by Murugan. Suklabaidya has been selected as a member of this committee, alongside counterparts from Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

The committee’s objective is to work on a comprehensive approach for the development and upliftment of fisheries throughout the country, with the aim of making India one of the global leaders in fish production in the future.
