Social entrepreneur talks about how to grow sports economy in Assam
Guwahati : Ranjit Barthakur (RB) wears multiple hats. He is a social entrepreneur, founder president of Balipara Foundation, chairman of FICCI’s North East Advisory and Indian Premier League (IPL), Rajasthan Royals, advisor to Tata Consultancy Services, and a board member at several organisations. In a tête-à-tête with Business-Northeast, he speaks on the socioeconomic development, infrastructure, connectivity and sports economy of the state.
BNE: How would you explain Assam’s economic development in the past few years?
RB: It is truly a pleasure to witness the remarkable development of the North East and the impressive growth of Assam in recent years. While the economy’s progress has been notable, it is heartening to see a focus on social well-being, particularly in the areas of healthcare, education and environmental sustainability of Assam.
One of the key areas that have seen significant improvements is healthcare, especially during the handling of the COVID pandemic. The efforts of the current chief minister have been commendable, and the advancements in healthcare services, including the establishment of cancer hospitals with the support of Tata Trust, have the potential to position Assam as a destination for top-notch medical treatment not just for the region but also for the neighbouring South Asian countries, such as Bangladesh and Myanmar. The enhancement in maternal and infant health indicators (MMR and IMR) is another testament to the dedication to improving the well-being of the people.
Connectivity is a vital aspect of overall development, and it is encouraging to know that the Chief Minister is focused on furthering this aspect. With ambitious plans to improve airline and waterway connectivity, Assam is poised to become a more accessible and attractive destination for tourism and business ventures. This emphasis on connectivity will undoubtedly have a positive impact on various sectors of the economy.
The commitment to a green economy is commendable as it not only promotes sustainable practices but also enhances the state's natural beauty and ecological balance. The initiative to increase the canopy cover and develop bio-diverse forests showcases a responsible approach towards the environment. Assam's biodiversity is an invaluable asset that must be preserved for future generations.
BNE: What would you say of the sports economy of Assam?
RB: As we move towards the future, it is essential to explore new avenues for growth, and the sports economy presents an exciting opportunity. Developing the sports ecosystem, including training facilities, education, playing fields and infrastructure, will not only contribute to the region’s economy but also provide opportunities for individuals to build careers in sports, both locally and globally. By investing in sports infrastructure, the state can attract sports enthusiasts, athletes and organisations, which will have a positive ripple effect on the overall economy.
Given the positive trajectory of development in Assam, we believe that organising an Investment Forum could be a strategic step to attract more investors and foster partnerships. The Forum could focus on various sectors, including healthcare, tourism, sustainable practices and the sports economy, showcasing the tremendous potential that Assam offers.
As we move ahead, we must continue to collaborate and work towards the holistic growth of the North East, with a strong emphasis on social well-being, sustainable practices, and inclusive development. Together, we can build a bright future for the region and create a model of progress for the nation.
