Relief for families of Sikkim affected by Pakyong Airport construction

Thirty-five families of Sikkim whose lands were damaged during the Pakyong Airport construction have received compensation from the Government of Sikkim giving them relief to some extent.

Reportedly, the State government released 20 percent of the land compensation to the affected families on Friday. The families have expressed their gratitude to Chief Minister P.S. Golay and Rhenock MLA Bishnu Kumar Khatiwada for their intervention and for providing some relief.

So far, the landowners have received 60 percent of their land compensation and now have 40 percent payment due from the State government.

The Pakyong Airport is a Greenfield airport at Pakyong town, 31 kilometer south of Gangtok, Sikkim, and spread over 81 hectares. At 4646 feet, this airport is one of the five highest airports in India. It is also the first Greenfield airport constructed in the Northeastern Region of India and the only airport in the state of Sikkim.
