Mumbai: Reliance Jio Infocomm, founded by India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani, is set to launch ‘Bharat GPT’, marking its first major foray into the artificial intelligence (AI) business. To develop this tool, the company will collaborate with IIT-Bombay, located in India’s business capital, Mumbai.

Akash Ambani, the son of Mukesh Ambani and the chairman of the company, said that ‘Bharat GPT’ will seek to leverage the power of large language models and generative artificial intelligence (GPT) to develop various sectors in India.

Through its broader vision, known as Jio 2.0, the company seeks to create a “comprehensive ecosystem of development”. The Bharat GPT program is a part of this initiative. The next decade will be defined by applications utilizing large language models and generative AI, Akash Ambani said, adding that Reliance aims to integrate AI “horizontally” across all sectors of the multi-faceted organization. AI will soon permeate every aspect of products and services, according to Ambani.

Ambani has also revealed that Reliance is working to develop its own operating system (OS) for television systems, marking another significant stride in software solutions for the company. Reliance remains committed to launching new projects and services in various domains, including media, commerce, communication, and devices, said Ambani.

Earlier this year, the company partnered with American chipmaking giant NVIDIA to develop AI solutions for the developing market. As per the partnership, NVIDIA will provide Jio with end-to-end AI supercomputer technologies including CPU, GPU, networking, and AI operating systems and frameworks for building the most advanced AI models. Jio will manage and maintain the AI cloud infrastructure and oversee customer engagement and access.

Meanwhile, the Indian government is also developing its own AI model, ‘Bhashini’, a language translation tool designed to enable the real-time interpretation of Indian languages. New Delhi has also been extremely vocal about its intent to tap into AI to take its development initiatives to the rural countryside.
