Purabi Dairy has achieved a significant milestone, crossing a turnover of Rs 320 crore for the fiscal year 2024–25, according to Satya Brata Bose, Managing Director of North East Dairy & Foods Limited (NEDFL), who shared insights into the dairy sector’s growth trajectory and its long-term vision for Assam in a detailed interaction with Business North East (BNE) recently.

Bose said that NEDFL, a joint initiative between the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and the Government of Assam, was established to strengthen cooperative dairying across the state. “While organisations like WAMUL and EAMUL focus on specific regions such as West and East Assam, NEDFL has a pan-Assam vision. We are working closely with these cluster unions to nurture a statewide cooperative dairy movement,” said Bose.

Highlighting the synergy of technical expertise from NDDB and policy support from the government, Bose underlined that the cooperative model ensures higher value returns to farmers. "Nearly 75 to 80 per cent of the consumer rupee goes directly back to farmers, which is quite unique. This benefits both consumers—through access to quality dairy products year-round—and farmers, guaranteed steady income," said Bose.

NEDFL is now gearing up to extend its reach to the Barak Valley, beginning with a 20,000-litre-per-day facility in Silchar, with a long-term plan to scale up to 1.5 lakh litres. “This will ensure complete geographic coverage of Assam under the cooperative dairy framework,” noted Bose.

The long-term vision, shaped with support from the Chief Minister of Assam and the NDDB Chairman, is to handle 10 lakh litres of milk daily by 2030 through the Assam Dairy Development Plan (ADDP). “We have already chalked out the roadmap to reach that goal,” said Bose.

In pursuit of this goal, the government has approved the construction of new processing units in Dibrugarh, Jorhat, and Dhemaji—each with planned capacities of 1 lakh and 50,000 litres per day, respectively. Plans are also underway to establish processing units in Silchar, Barpeta, Guwahati, and Sonitpur or Dhemaji. Together, these units will enhance Assam's overall milk processing capacity to over 10.5 lakh litres, according to Bose.

Bose added that dairying has emerged as a major source of livelihood and economic upliftment. “The target is to directly engage 1.75 lakh farmers. Beyond that, the value chain—from bulk milk collection to retail distribution—is generating employment across levels. With 6,000 retail outlets and a growing network of village-level entrepreneurs operating bulk milk coolers, the sector is boosting rural employment significantly,” said the NEDFL MD.

With a sharp focus on market expansion, product diversification and robust infrastructure development, NEDFL aims to transform Purabi into a leading dairy brand in Northeast India—anchored firmly in cooperative values and sustainable rural growth.
