Guwahati: West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Ltd (WAMUL), the dairy cooperative in Asam operating the renowned Purabi Dairy brand, has reported a notable surge in milk procurement and sales in 2023.
The cooperative, issuing a release, said that milk procurement has increased by 15%, while sales have witnessed a 21% upswing. Furthermore, the value-added milk products category has experienced a substantial growth of more than 35% compared to the previous year.
Purabi will soon launch a new plant at Panjabari in Guwahati, where a range of new products including ice cream, flavored milk, and sweets will be introduced. This will enhance the value of the milk supply chain, thereby ensuring sustainable benefits for local farmers and contributing to a thriving agricultural ecosystem, says the company.
"This exciting development heralds a new era for both consumers and farmers alike, creating a ripple effect throughout the entire dairy value chain", WAMUL Managing Director, Satyabrata Bose said, showing his enthusiasm for this development.
He further outlined the cooperative's goals for the year, aiming to welcome a record number of dairy farmers into the Purabi family while introducing various products for their customers. "These initiatives align with the vision of Prime Minister for the doubling of farmers' income and contribute to building a robust rural economy, as envisioned by Assam Chief Minister", Purabi added in its release.
Highlighting the cooperative's growth trajectory over the years, Bose also emphasized its commitment to providing better livelihoods to thousands of dairy farmers in the state.
He attributed the success not only to increased milk sales but also to the introduction of allied products last year, such as Purabi's honey, designed to generate "additional income for farmers." The cooperative says it sourced honey from local beekeepers in Assam and organized workshops and training programs to empower farmers and boost their income through beekeeping.
