North East Industrial Policy: Assam CM makes special request to Union Minister for Commerce & Industry

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, meeting Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal at his office at Udyog Bhawan in New Delhi last week, urged him to launch the North East Industrial Policy "as Assam and the northeast region have been witnessing rapid economic growth and it would give an added impetus to the existing efforts." 

During the 40-minute-long interaction, Chief Minister Sarma apprised Goyal about the rapid progress the state has made on the industrial front with new investments pouring in. According to an official release, Goyal assured Sarma that his proposal to launch the North East Industrial Policy would be "under active consideration" by his ministry. 

“Given that Assam northeast is  witnessing rapid economic growth, it will be opportune to launch the North East Industrial Policy to augment to existing efforts, I urged [Goyal], Sarma later posted on X (formerly Twitter). The Union Minister also took to X and said, "Always a pleasure to interact with the Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa ji."

The North East Industrial Development Scheme, 2017 was notified on 12th December 2018 and came into effect from 1st April 2017 for five years i.e. till 31st March 2022. Under the scheme, industrial units are provided with benefits. However, a new policy has not been announce since the expiry of the last one.
