New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has revealed plans for a 5 percent increase in toll rates starting on Monday. Originally slated for April 1, the implementation was postponed due to the Lok Sabha elections.

The adjustment in toll rates, informed by changes in the wholesale price index (CPI)-based inflation, is an annual occurrence. This measure aims to ensure alignment with economic fluctuations influencing user fee adjustments.

India's extensive network of national highways, comprising approximately 855 toll plazas, will be affected by this revision. Among these, about 675 are publicly funded, with the remaining 180 operated by concessionaires.

The toll hikes form part of the routine process governed by the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, reflecting NHAI's commitment to infrastructure maintenance and development.

It's noteworthy that toll collections witnessed a significant surge, soaring to more than 540 billion rupees ($6.5 billion) in the 2022-2023 fiscal year from 252 billion in 2018-2019. The  increase can be attributed to the rise in road traffic, coupled with expansions in the number of toll plazas and charges.
