PM to launch portal for textiles & crafts
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday participated in the 9th National Handloom Day celebration at Pragati Maidan in Delhi.
Modi tweeted that this is an occasion to reiterate “our commitment towards popularizing local textiles and handlooms in the spirit of being ‘Vocal For Local’”.
The day is observed on August 7 every year to promote the handloom and to recognize the efforts as well as skills of the community of weavers engaged in the sector.
The theme designated for National Handloom Day in 2023 is ‘Handlooms for Sustainable Fashion’. This theme emphasises the significance of handloom weaving as an environmentally friendly and sustainable substitute for machine-made fabrics.
In Assam, CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma wished the weaving community by referring to a quote by Mahatma Gandhi that Assamese women weave fairy tales in their clothes.
Modi is also set to launch an e-portal on August 7 that will be a repository of Textiles and Crafts. The portal has been developed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).
The programme is being attended by over 3,000 handloom and khadi weavers, artisans and stakeholders from the textile and MSME sectors. It will bring together handloom clusters across India, NIFT campuses, Weaver Service Centres, Indian Institute of Handloom Technology campuses, National Handloom Development Corporation, Handloom Export Promotion Council, KVIC institutions and various State Handloom Departments.
