Seattle: As per reports, Microsoft has initiated another wave of layoffs this week, as reported by Geekwire, in an ongoing effort to streamline its workforce. The tech giant's recent job cuts have affected employees in various roles, including product and program management, as revealed by several LinkedIn posts.
Reportedly, the layoffs have impacted multiple teams across different geographic locations, although Microsoft has not disclosed the exact number of employees affected. A spokesperson for the company stated to Geekwire, “Organizational and workforce adjustments are a necessary and regular part of managing our business. We will continue to prioritize and invest in strategic growth areas for our future and in support of our customers and partners.”
Notably, this round of layoffs follows a series of job cuts earlier in the year. In January, Microsoft laid off 2,000 employees in its gaming division, shortly after its 69 billion dollars acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Additionally, in June, the company reduced its workforce by approximately 1,000 jobs, affecting areas such as the Azure cloud unit and the HoloLens mixed reality organization.
Microsoft's employee count saw a rise during the COVID-19 pandemic but has since stabilized. By the end of 2023, the company employed around 227,000 people worldwide, down from 232,000 the previous year, according to Geekwire.
These recent layoffs are part of Microsoft's strategy to maintain profit margins and increase capital expenditure to support the cloud infrastructure necessary for training and deploying AI models. The company's focus remains on investing in areas that promise strategic growth and better service for its customers and partners.
