New Delhi: Mercedes-Benz AG plans to launch four electric vehicles (EVs) in India over the next 8-12 months, according to the company’s head of region overseas, Matthias Luehrs.

Currently, the luxury car manufacturer sells four EV models in India out of over 20 models. Though the company operates a plant near Pune that can assemble about 20,000 units per annum, it has no plans to set up a car manufacturing facility in India due to sufficient production capacity worldwide for the next five to eight years.

Mercedes-Benz AG is the market leader in the luxury car market in India, holding approximately a 44% share. The company has introduced an agency model in India where cars are sold directly to customers at a fixed price, and dealers receive a fixed fee to hand over the unit.

Mercedes-Benz AG is only focusing on EVs for alternative fuels and not developing hybrid cars as it considers EVs to be the only right solution to global climate challenges.
