Shillong: The Meghalaya government will set up a centre for climate studies in Upper Shillong, East Khasi Hills.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, while addressing the gathering at the Think20 Conference here on July 6, said the indigenous communities in the state can pave the way for a new social and economic order by pioneering a conservation-based lifestyle.
The conference is focused on ‘Nature Solves: A New Framework for Our Sustainable Future’ and is organized by the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency, in collaboration with the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) as the Think20 (T20) Secretariat under India’s G20 Presidency.
Sangma said the meeting has brought diverse minds and environment experts to find possible sustainable blueprints for the future.
Chief Secretary DP Walang highlighted the payment for ecosystem project in Meghalaya. Launched on June 13 last year, the scheme gives benefits to thousands of farmers. The government has initiated the mapping of 60,000 springs.
Wahlang also mentioned that scientific mining would be a game changer in Meghalaya as he spoke about green infrastructure and urban planning.
