Shillong: The Meghalaya government has signed MoUs with NTPC Limited for power management systems of the state’s distribution companies, development of power supply panels and floating solar energy in the state.

Taking to Twitter, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said on Monday, “This collaboration promises to enhance power connectivity and improve the overall power scenario in Meghalaya.”

On July 6, Sangma and other departmental officials met NTPC representatives to explore avenues to enhance power connectivity and availability in the state.

“Bridging the gap in energy distribution with professional approach is crucial for a brighter and sustainable future. We are committed to power up Meghalaya with reliable, accessible, and clean energy,” he had tweeted.

The state had been paying about Rs 300-400 crore to NTPC even if the former was not using a single unit of power. Lat year, NTPC agreed to reallocate 70% of power share to Tamil Nadu and the decision came as a relief to Meghalaya.

“We are very fortunate that after a lot of hard work and even some court cases, now NTPC has agreed and they are working towards reallocating the power to different states. Approximately, 56 MW has been allotted to Tamil Nadu of the share of 86 MW that was total for Meghalaya. This means that almost 70% now Meghalaya doesn’t have to pay for the power (it did not take),” Sangma had said.
