Guwahati: Parts of Manipur are facing severe flooding, with areas such as Imphal East, Imphal West, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur particularly affected. The flash floods have led to the closure of shops, commercial and private transportation, and FMCG logistics in various regions.

The flooding has persisted for over a week, impacting nearly 200,000 people across 348 villages. Urban areas are also experiencing flood-like conditions due to incessant rains brought by Cyclone Remal.

Business North East conducted a telephonic interview with a local resident of the affected area. Roshni Kumar Singh, a resident of Lairik Yengbam in East Imphal, reported that their locality has been without electricity for almost a week. There is a severe shortage of food and drinking water. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Loktak Development Authority, and Assam Rifles have been providing aid, but it is not always sufficient. Singh mentioned that he often relies on help from family and friends in safer areas. "Consistent rains from Cyclone Remal caused our rivers to overflow, inundating most of our area," Mr. Singh added.

Another resident, Chongtham Johnson from Keishampat Leimajam in Imphal West, noted that the water level in his locality has slightly receded, and electricity has been restored. Chongtham, who is dedicated to social service, decided to provide food to those in need. He travels to singjamei Bazar in his own vehicle to buy groceries, water, and other essential items, which he then distributes by boat in the affected areas. "Due to transportation issues, high demand, and unavailability of vegetables, prices have increased," Chongtham explained.

Most commercial areas, shops, and transportation services remain shut down. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh is continuously monitoring the situation. He tweeted, "I appreciate the relentless efforts of the minor irrigation department. The officials, working in collaboration with local authorities, clubs, and volunteers, have been working tirelessly day and night to ensure the swift removal/pumping out of water from populated and residential areas to restore normalcy, allowing businesses to resume and daily activities to continue."
