Imphal: Manipur in the Northeast has received its first consignment of cement via goods train, a significant step towards Manipur's infrastructure development which marks a big milestone in transportation logistics.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh made the announcement on social media platforms on Monday. "This initiative will greatly reduce the cost of transportation, making construction materials more affordable and accessible", the CM wrote on X (formerly Twitter). "It paves the way for accelerated infrastructure development, benefiting every citizen of our state", he added.
The successful delivery of the cement consignment to Khongsang station in the Tamenglong district is considered a crucial step in Manipur's efforts to improve the accessibility and affordability of construction supplies. Singh also extended his gratitude to the Indian Railways, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), and all officials involved for their "relentless efforts in realizing this feat."
Manipur resumed passenger train services between Jiribam and Khongsang, spanning approximately 55 kilometers, from February 7, 2024. The train service had been suspended since May 4, 2023, following the eruption of ethnic violence a day earlier. At present, the Northeast Indian state, which is partially hilly, has 5 railway stations.
