Imphal: Kangabam Bijaya Chanu, an entrepreneur and social activist from Manipur, and the President of the North East Women Entrepreneurs Association, has introduced a new range of products inspired by the traditional textiles of the state. Designed and tailored by Basanta Lukram of Basan L K Enterprises, these items are currently undergoing copyright protection, with a vision to reach global customers and elevate the economic standing of women entrepreneurs in Manipur.
The highlight of the collection is the Leirum phee, traditionally used as a shawl and a customary gift from bride to groom in Meitei culture. Chanu aims to repurpose this fabric, known for its red, black, and white colours symbolising peace, power, unity, and trust, into modern garments like coats, appealing to a wider audience. This initiative is seen as a way to give the fabric a functional role beyond tradition, while providing income opportunities for local weavers.
Another featured product is the Shapee/Lanphee, a shawl once reserved for honouring brave soldiers and Naga chiefs. The fabric is adorned with motifs of animals, celestial symbols, and cultural icons. The core colours of red and white symbolise the sun, cosmos, and stars, with deep cultural significance rooted in tribal and Meitei heritage.
These products aim to reach the global market, offering sustainable income to Manipur's artisans and promoting the state's cultural legacy to the world.
