Agartala: The Maitri Setu, spanning the Feni River to link India and Bangladesh, is poised to open its gates to passenger movement by September, announced a senior government official. This announcement follows the virtual inauguration of the 1.9 km long bridge by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina on March 9, 2021.

The Maitri Setu, a symbol of friendship between the two nations, establishes a vital link between Sabroom in India and Ramgarh in Bangladesh. Its completion holds strategic importance, facilitating the movement of people and fostering trade and commerce between the regions. With the Chittagong port in Bangladesh a mere 80 km away from Sabroom, the bridge is poised to become a crucial conduit for economic activities for the entire northeastern region.

Last year, Modi and Hasina Wednesday also inaugurated a rail link connecting the state with Bangladesh. The Agartala-Akhaura project will cut down the travel time between Agartala and Kolkata, from 31 hours to 10 hours.

As preparations for passenger movement gain momentum, the imminent reopening of the Kamalasagar border haat in Tripura's Sepahijala district adds to the optimism for enhanced cross-border interactions. Furthermore, the government's emphasis on establishing industrial estates along national highways underscores a broader vision for economic growth and infrastructure development.

Against this backdrop, Tripura's Industries and Commerce Department Secretary, Kiran Gitte, highlighted the state's proactive approach towards attracting investments. The recent signing of 14 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) worth  Rs 1,861.51 crore at the North-East Investment summit in Delhi demonstrates the growing confidence among entrepreneurs in the region.
