Lt General Raghu Srinivasan Reviews Border Road Projects In NE India

Kameng: Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan, VSM, Director General of Border Roads, concluded a three-day visit to Guwahati, Tawang, and West Kameng from December 1 to 3, 2024. During the visit, he reviewed the progress of key border road projects being undertaken by Project Vartak in the strategically important North Eastern region. 

The visit commenced in Guwahati, where Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan was briefed by Mr. Harendra Kumar, AVSM, VSM, Additional Director General Border Roads (East), on the ongoing border road projects across the entire North Eastern Region. The update included details on various road construction initiatives aimed at improving connectivity and strengthening defense infrastructure in the region.

The delegation then moved to Tawang, where Lt Gen Srinivasan conducted an aerial survey of several border roads in the Zimithang sector, including the areas of Nelya, Dhaula, and Hatonga. The survey also covered the forward areas of Lungro, Damteng, and Yangtse, which are critical for the defense preparedness of the region. The Director General reviewed the progress of these strategically significant roads, which are vital for enhancing connectivity to remote and border areas.

While in Tawang, Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan met with Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Pema Khandu. They discussed several important issues related to future road infrastructure projects in the region, emphasizing the need for better connectivity for both civilian and defense needs. The discussions focused on the importance of road development in boosting the local economy and enhancing security along the border.

Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan also met key officials from the Tawang region, including the MLA and the Deputy Commissioner, to review the progress and challenges faced in the implementation of road infrastructure projects. He inspected the operations of the Sela Tunnel, one of the most critical pieces of infrastructure in the region. Located at an altitude of 13,000 feet, the Sela Tunnel is the longest bi-lane tunnel in India and ensures all-weather connectivity between Guwahati and Tawang.

During his inspection of the Sela Tunnel, the Director General was briefed on the Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, which enables real-time monitoring of tunnel operations. He also reviewed the functionality of safety features and technical standards, ensuring they align with international norms.

Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan expressed satisfaction with the operations of the Sela Tunnel and commended the efforts of Project Vartak’s team for ensuring the uninterrupted movement of vehicles and supplies to Tawang and other border areas throughout the year. His visit underscored the significance of the border road projects in enhancing connectivity, improving infrastructure, and strengthening national security in the region.
