New Delhi: Upendra Dwivedi has been appointed as the next Chief of Army Staff, succeeding the incumbent General Manoj Pande.

He has served twice with the Assam Rifles, first as Sector Commander in the 26 Sector Pallel, Manipur, and later as Inspector General of Assam Rifles (East). During his tenure as sector commander, Dwivedi demonstrated exemplary leadership and strategic acumen, achieving over 150 Apprehensions, 173 surrenders, and neutralizing seven insurgents, the Rifles said, adding that his contributions to the sector were marked by operational effectiveness and community engagement.

Following his role in Pallel, Dwivedi commanded the IGAR (East) from Mar 2017 to Oct 2018. He was instrumental in addressing and mitigating insurgency challenges in South Assam and Jiribam, executing numerous Civic Action Projects, and ensuring synergy with political and civil authorities. He effectively managed perception, conceptualized comprehensive development initiatives, and addressed core issues through people-friendly strategies.

Dwivedi's contribution was the publication of a comprehensive compendium on Indo-Myanmar Border Management during his tenure as Inspector General Assam Rifles (East). This compendium provides stakeholders with valuable insights into the peculiarities and challenges of managing the Indo-Myanmar border, facilitating the movement of people and the growth of trade.

The Assam Rifles said it takes great pride in its association with Dwivedi and extends their congratulations and best wishes to him for a fruitful and satisfying tenure as Chief of Army Staff.
