Kochi: Kerala's top IT hub, Infopark, achieved a remarkable 24.28 pc increase in IT exports, generating a record-breaking Rs 11,417 crore in the fiscal year 2023-24, marking a milestone in its two-decade history. The latest number signifies a significant increase that has been ongoing for the last eight years, with IT exports from Infopark totaling just Rs 3,000 crore in 2016-17. At that time, the IT complex contained 328 companies and 32,800 employees in a constructed area of 70 lakh square feet, as stated here on Tuesday.

As of April 2024, Infopark saw an increase in built-up space to 92.62 lakh sq.ft., accommodating 582 companies and over 70,000 employees. CEO Susanth Kurunthil attributed the significant progress to Infopark's ability to take advantage of global digitalization initiatives amid the Covid-19 pandemic. This led to the creation of job opportunities in the field of IT. "He highlighted the fact that the number had doubled during the period."

He mentioned that there was a strong need for IT products starting in early 2020 because businesses were encouraged to pursue innovations due to the emergence of the novel coronavirus and the subsequent new way of operating. Kurunthil stated that due to the need for IT firms to educate employees in new technologies to meet the demand, there was a surge in the industry.

Infopark's IT exports showed remarkable growth amidst the Covid pandemic, reaching Rs 6,310 crore in 2020-21 with a 21.35 pc increase, Rs 8,500 crore in 2021-22 with a 34.7 pc growth, and Rs 9,186 crore in 2022-23 with an 8.07 pc rise, according to the statement. In addition to its Phase-1 and 2 campuses in suburban Kakkanad, Infopark also has a campus in Koratty, Thrissur and another one in Cherthala, Alappuzha district. Inaugurated in 2004, Infopark Kochi accommodates over 67,000 workers across 503 IT and software companies in a sprawling 87.46 lakh sq.ft space.
