New Delhi: The Indian economy is expected to grow by 10 percent in the next five years, according to Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika. The minister, during a recent discussion with media, also announced that the Water Resources Department will conduct a comprehensive study with experts to find a far-reaching solution to the flood problem in Assam.
Hazarika has directed officials to keep the sluice gates under the state water resources department operational and discussed new dams to be constructed in various districts. "It is necessary to take some time to find a comprehensive solution to the flood and erosion problem in the state through IIT Guwahati or any reliable institution if necessary," he said.
In another meeting at Janata Bhawan, the minister took stock of the dams to be constructed in various districts of the state next year.
During an important departmental meeting at his office, the minister held a detailed discussion with the chief engineer of the Water Resources Department and other engineers, in the presence of Professor Rajiv Bhattacharya of IIT Guwahati and Professor Bibhash Sharma of Assam College of Engineering.
The minister asked the two experts about the flood control measures of the Kalajal River and mentioned technical problems in the construction of the dam in Kalajal as a result of preliminary studies.
The minister urged the people to inform them about the work that the department can do to relieve them from the problems they are facing. He also stated that IIT Guwahati has been empowered to conduct a comprehensive study on the matter.
