New Delhi: With the highly anticipated T20 World Cup 2024 match between India and Pakistan set to take place in New York on June 9, cricket enthusiasts worldwide are causing an unprecedented surge in ticket prices on resale markets.
Lalit Modi, the founder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) expressed his shock on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, revealing that tickets for the Diamond Club at the event are being sold for a staggering $20,000 dollars each. "The WC in the US is for game expansion & fan engagement, not a means to make profits on gate collections", he wrote.
The match, which will take place on June 9 in New York, is part of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup hosted by the United States and West Indies from June 1 to 29.
As per reports, official ticket prices for the clash began at a reasonable $6 (Rs 497), with premium seats priced at $400 (Rs 33,148) before taxes. However, the limited availability of tickets resulted in a quick sell-out, encouraging resale services such as StubHub and SeatGeek to profit from the rising demand.
On secondary markets, tickets initially priced at $400 are now commanding staggering prices of up to $40,000 (approximately Rs. 33 lakh), with total costs soaring to $50,000 (around Rs. 41 lakhs) when platform fees are factored in.
The matchup between India and Pakistan, historically a ticket-selling powerhouse due to their intense rivalry, last caused a frenzy during their World Cup encounter in Ahmedabad last year, which saw fans scramble for tickets. Hosts India defeated their arch rivals by 7 wickets.
