Udaipur: The International Zinc Association (IZA) stated that India is expected to consume more than 2 million tonnes of zinc in the next decade, up from the current 1.1 million tonnes. During Zinc College 2024, Andrew Green, Executive Director of IZA, stated that zinc consumption in India is currently at 1.1 million tonnes, surpassing the country's production. It is projected to exceed 2 million tonnes in the next decade. "That is the prediction."

Every two years, the International Zinc Association partners with a member company to host Zinc College. Hindustan Zinc Ltd is an associate of Zinc College 2024. He also mentioned that the primary production of the global zinc market is approximately 13.5 million tonnes per year. One significant contrast is that the average zinc consumption per person globally is approximately four to five times greater than in India. He elaborated that there are various areas where zinc usage must be raised in order to comply with international regulations.

An illustration I could provide is related to automobiles. Approximately 90-95 pc of the worldwide car industry relies on galvanized steel. In India, zinc provides protection against corrosion to steel in automotive applications at a rate of approximately 23 percent. He explained that efforts are being made in India to promote the use of galvanized steel within the automotive market in order to align it with global standards. He mentioned that IZA has also been involved in establishing a standard for galvanized rebar in India. We are collaborating with the authorities to establish a guideline for galvanized materials.
