New Delhi: The Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), in collaboration with NHAI, has announced a Global Expression of Interest (EOI) for the implementation of a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system.

Under the initiative, GNSS technology will be integrated into the existing FASTag ecosystem, offering a hybrid model where RFID-based ETC and GNSS-based ETC will operate concurrently. Initially, dedicated GNSS lanes will be introduced at toll plazas, ensuring seamless passage for vehicles utilizing the GNSS-based ETC. Over time, all lanes are slated to transition to GNSS lanes, promising enhanced efficiency and transparency in toll operations.

The EOI solicits proposals from experienced and innovative companies capable of developing and implementing a robust Toll Charger Software, which will serve as the backbone for the GNSS-based ETC system in India. Interested parties are invited to submit their bids via email to tenders@ihmcl.com before 1500 hrs (IST) on 22nd July 2024.

The adoption of GNSS-based ETC holds significant benefits for highway users, including barrier-less, free-flow tolling, and distance-based tolling, ensuring fair charges for the distance travelled on National Highways. Moreover, the implementation of this advanced technology is expected to streamline toll collection processes, minimizing leakages and deterring toll evaders.
