India has formalized a major defence acquisition by signing an intergovernmental agreement with France to purchase 26 naval variants of the Rafale fighter jet, valued at nearly ₹64,000 crore. The deal, finalized on Monday, April 28, marks a significant boost for the Indian Navy’s aviation capabilities, news agency PTI reported.
The agreement was exchanged in the presence of Defence Secretary RK Singh, Vice Admiral K Swaminathan, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who attended the signing ceremony. Under the terms of the contract, French defence manufacturer Dassault Aviation will supply 26 Rafale Marine jets, with deliveries scheduled to begin around 2030 — approximately five years from the date of signing.
Once delivered, these new aircraft will be integrated into the Indian Navy’s fleet, particularly onboard the INS Vikrant aircraft carrier. The fresh addition will raise India’s total Rafale fleet to 36, following an earlier procurement of 10 jets aimed at modernizing the country's military assets.

The agreement not only includes the fighter jets but also encompasses ancillary equipment, weapon systems, and spares necessary for operations. Notably, Dassault Aviation will also assist in enabling India to manufacture the marine variant of the Rafale aircraft domestically, further strengthening the nation's defence production capabilities.
The Rafale Marine is a versatile twin-jet fighter, capable of both carrier-based and shore-based operations. According to Dassault's technical data, the aircraft boasts a maximum speed of 750 knots, can operate at altitudes up to 50,000 feet, and requires just a 450-meter runway for landing without the aid of a drag chute.
The acquisition follows the Ministry of Defence’s approval in July 2023 and reflects India’s continued focus on enhancing its naval air power amid evolving strategic challenges.
