Mumbai: The New Political Economy Initiative at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode, is hosting the first edition of the Economy and Society Winter School as part of its ‘Social Structures of the Economy’ Research Cluster from December 9 to 21.

"The initiative aims to shift sociology and social science scholarship in India and the Global South to study how material aspects and economic facets of life are produced and reproduced through social and political processes, while being attentive to the mutual embeddedness and symbiotic relationships between markets, states, societies, and cultures", the institutes said in a joint release.

The Global South refers to the world's developing countries and least developed countries.

The official release noted, "Research exploring how social networks contribute to shape and are shaped by the accumulation of capital in both formal and informal economic settings is relatively scarce. There is also a lack of academic studies that examine how shifts in institutions shape and influence the context and results of economic actions. The Economy & Society Winter School aims to make up for this absence and incubate a scholarly community in the Global South locales to take these new approaches to the study of economy and society more formally in their own research and work."

The student cohort will be chosen through an online call for applications followed by interviews of shortlisted candidates. The Winter School will cover both the foundations and the frontiers of economic sociology from American, Latin American, and European traditions, including interactive lectures on methods. Faculty will come from India and abroad.

Eligibility ranges from advanced undergraduates to Master’s and PhD scholars looking to gain exposure in the fields of economic sociology and other allied areas such as social structures of accumulation (SSA).

Students who are not based in India or require a visa to travel to India will also receive support to cover the visa fee.
