Agricultural Research (ICAR) sponsored All India Coordinated Research Project on Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology organised a one-day Technology and Machinery Demonstration Mela cum Awareness Program on Food Loss Prevention.
The event, held at the Khanapara center in collaboration with the Department of Livestock Products Technology, College of Veterinary Science, attracted over 200 participants, including self-help group members, entrepreneurs, and farmers from various food sectors.
Dr. Probodh Borah, Director of Research (Veterinary), chaired the event, while Dr. B.N. Saikia, Dean of the College of Veterinary Science, served as the Chief Guest. Other dignitaries included Dr. Birendra Kumar Sarma, Joint Registrar, and Dr. Hiranya Bhattacharya, Associate Director of Extension Education.
Dr. Saurabh Kumar Laskar, the organizer, emphasized the significance of meat in the diet of Northeast India and highlighted the importance of proper processing to prevent spoilage and loss. The event showcased various innovations, technologies, and machineries developed by the center to promote hygienic production, processing, and value addition of meat and meat products.
The mela also focused on the utilization of meat by-products to enhance farmers' income and convert waste into wealth. Some of the innovative machineries demonstrated included a mobile poultry processing cart, pork sale and display cart, revolving barbeque, and paddle-operated meat mincer. Additionally, the event showcased a range of novel meat products like meat powder, meat snacks, pickles, and smoked meat products.
