Who is Gunjan Kedia, US Bancorp’s First Indian-American CEO?

Gunjan Kedia has become the next Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of US Bancorp, achieving a historic milestone as the first Indian American to head the organisation. Kedia is all set to formally take on the role after the annual shareholders meeting on April 15, replacing Andy Cecere, who will move to the role of executive chairman. Kedia will additionally become part of the Board of Directors. 

Her appointment arrives as US Bancorp persists in solidifying its status as a top financial institution in the United States, acknowledged for its digital advancements, customer service, and ethical banking practices. 

Who is Gunjan Kedia?

Gunjan Kedia is an experienced financial professional with almost thirty years in the financial services sector. Her tenure at US Bancorp began in 2016 as the Vice Chair of Wealth Management and Investment Services, contributing significantly to the bank's strategic initiatives. Before joining US Bancorp, she served in leadership roles at State Street Financial, BNY Mellon, McKinsey & Company and PwC.

Her remarkable contributions have garnered her numerous accolades, including seven selections to American Banker’s Most Powerful Women in Banking and Finance list and two appearances on Barron’s 100 Most Influential Women in U.S. Finance. 

Gunjan Kedia's Journey from Delhi to the Top of U.S. Banking Institution

Born and raised in Delhi, Kedia completed her bachelor's degree in engineering at the Delhi School of Engineering before obtaining an MBA from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University. She maintains strong connections with her alma mater by serving on the Tepper School Business Board of Advisors and often returns to guide students.

Looking back on her journey, Kedia attributed her career development to the education and support she gained at Carnegie Mellon. “I came to the Tepper School straight from India. I grew up in relatively modest conditions and had never imagined that I would end up at such an elite business school. The school provided me with the advanced skills, insights, networks, and a supportive environment that helped me realise my potential,” she said.

Upon assuming her new position, Kedia has conveyed a firm dedication to upholding the company's principles while fostering growth and innovation. “We will build on a solid foundation of integrity and doing business the right way to drive growth,” she stated in a release.

In addition to her corporate duties, Kedia is actively involved on the boards of PBS, Junior Achievement USA, the American Red Cross, and CorStone. She is likewise a member of the Advisory Council for the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA).
