New Delhi: Sunil Barthwal, Secretary of the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, recently spoke at the '9th CII India-LAC Conclave,' focusing on strengthening South-South Cooperation.
During his speech, he emphasized the great potential for enhancing bilateral trade between India and the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries.
Barthwal stressed the need for innovative approaches to diversify trade exchanges, especially in a re-globalized world and amidst evolving energy landscapes. He also highlighted the role of the G20, particularly under India's presidency, in addressing concerns of the Global South and fostering deeper engagements with the LAC region during Brazil's G20 Presidency in 2024.
The Secretary underscored the significance of India-LAC collaboration in achieving energy transition goals and suggested exploring fresh perspectives in renewable energy, battery manufacturing, energy storage technology, and the chemical industry to align with the Net Zero objective.
To facilitate cooperation, Barthwal proposed a Joint Economic and Trade Cooperation model and emphasized the importance of unified efforts in addressing international issues at various forums. He echoed the sentiments of Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and Textiles, who highlighted trust as the foundation for collaboration between India and the Latin American and Caribbean countries.
The closing ceremony of the '9th CII India-LAC Conclave' was attended by dignitaries such as Meenakshi Lekhi, Union Minister of State for External Affairs, and H.E. Delcy Eloína Rodríguez Gómez, Executive Vice President and Minister of People’s Power for Economy, Finance Foreign Trade of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
