Detroit: As per reports, General Motors (GM) is optimistic about its electric vehicle (EV) future, despite falling short of its ambitious goal to catch Tesla by 2025. CEO Mary Barra had predicted the automaker would close the gap with the EV leader, but slower industry-wide EV adoption and GM-specific hurdles in production, software, and supply chains have delayed progress.

General Motors Company (GM)is an American multinational  automotive manufacturing company headquartered in Detroit , Michigan, United States. The company is most known for owning and manufacturing four automobile brands: Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and CAdillac By total sales, it has continuously been the largest automaker in the United States, and was the largest in the world for 77 years before losing the top spot to Toyoto  in 2008.

While GM has scaled back some of its previously announced EV targets, the company is gaining momentum with an expanded lineup that spans from affordable models starting at 35,000  dollars to luxury vehicles over 300,000 dollars. Rory Harvey, GM's president of global markets, told CNBC, “We are outpacing the industry in EV growth,” adding that GM now offers the most comprehensive EV range in the U.S.

Sales data provided by GM indicates a 70 percent increase in EV sales through August compared to last year. The company sold nearly 21,000 EVs in July and August—almost matching its entire second-quarter performance. This puts GM within 2,000 units of Ford's EV sales for the year, though it remains more than 20,000 units behind Hyundai/Kia. Tesla continues to dominate the market, selling more than 164,000 EVs in the second quarter, more than double the combined sales of GM, Ford, and Hyundai/Kia.

Harvey did not speculate on when GM might surpass its rivals but expressed confidence in a strong fourth quarter. “We have momentum on our side,” he said, anticipating a robust close to the year as EV adoption accelerates.

Despite the challenges, GM remains determined to capture a larger share of the growing EV market.
