Guwahati: A conclave on Farmer-Producer Companies (FPCs) and cooperative societies for fisheries recently discussed the importance of genetically improved fish seeds and the efforts being made to develop high-quality seeds in Assam.

NK Debnath, the State Director of Fisheries, explained the intricacies involved in rearing quality fish seeds of various species, such as Jayanti Rohu, Amur carp, and improved catla.

The high-yielding fish seed varieties are procured from the National Freshwater Fisheries Brood Bank in Bhubaneswar.

Dr Dhrubajyoti Sarma, the Nodal Officer of Assam Agri-Business and Rural Transformation Project (Fishery), highlighted that this initiative will increase the availability of fish seeds in the state, ensuring timely supply and reasonable costs.

The focus is on achieving self-reliance in quality fish seed production for the extended culture area. The known source of fish seeds will enable producers to grow larger fish within a specific timeframe, benefiting both the producers and consumers.
