The Assam Excise Department in the fiscal year 2021–2022, the Assam excise department made Rs. 1930 crore, with the sale of premium liquor accounting for 70 percent of revenue.

The excise department's revenue comes from the sale of other brands including elegant, premium, and classic premium.

There is a significant market demand for luxury brand liquor, which unquestionably contributed 70 percent of the excise department's overall revenue, according to a statement from a top officer in the department.

The official stated that the department generated total revenue of Rs 1930 Crore in the financial year 2021–22, Rs 2,030 Crore in the financial year 2020–21, and Rs 1,639 Crore in the year 2019–20.

It is to be noted that during the lockdown in 2020 due to covid, the price of liquor was increased as the excise department increased the tax. The government declared that a 25% tax was increased on all liquor segments, but in the upper segment it turned out to be about 50 to 65 percent.

Reports revealed that the government's move to raise liquor taxes was unplanned.
