Mridusmita Das Bora has carved a niche for herself as a passionate advocate for the region’s rich cultural heritage. A professional dancer and a recipient of the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Award from the Sangeet Natak Academy, Mridusmita’s artistic journey has always been intertwined with her love for Assam’s vibrant culture. After relocating to Assam with her family, she found herself longing to express her artistic capabilities in new ways, sparking a journey that would lead to the creation of The Copo—a brand dedicated to promoting Assam’s unique craftsmanship and artistry.

In a recent conversation with Business Northeast, Mridusmita shared her journey and the inspiration behind The Copo. “After moving to Assam, I felt a void for unique Assamese gifts,” she explained. She began designing souvenirs that represent Assam’s cultural identity, working with local artisans and manufacturers to bring her ideas to life.

The Copo focuses on handmade products, including exquisite handloom sarees, stylish stoles, and charming handicrafts, reflecting Assam's rich traditions. Mridusmita emphasizes the importance of supporting local artisans, helping them adapt to modern market demands while preserving traditional crafts. “It’s about teaching artisans the wholesale game and ensuring they gain economic independence,” she noted.

With a commitment to quality, The Copo carefully curates its offerings. Mridusmita personally oversees the design and production process, ensuring each product meets her high standards. Despite starting as a small venture, The Copo has experienced remarkable growth, doubling its revenue within just six months.

Reflecting on the growth of The Copo, Mridusmita expressed her gratitude. “I never anticipated the success we’ve seen. My revenue has doubled since we began, primarily through word-of-mouth and social media. It’s a beautiful journey, and I want to keep it that way—maintaining our handcrafted essence while reaching those who truly appreciate Assamese culture.”

Looking ahead, Mridusmita aims to expand The Copo’s product range, exploring home decor and contemporary Assamese jewelry. Her vision is to create a brand synonymous with Assam’s heritage, celebrated both locally and nationally.
