In a recent interview with Business North East, Mr. Jaideep Baruah, Director of Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), shed light on the council's comprehensive approach to science outreach and funding. Mr. Baruah highlighted ASTEC's Aryabhata Science Centres, strategically established in 219 development blocks across Assam.

These centres, situated primarily in schools and NGOs, serve as hubs for engaging rural students and communities in science and technology. Dedicated volunteers actively promote science education and address societal issues such as agriculture superstitions and health misconceptions. ASTEC, as the principal agency under the Department of Science Technology and Climate Change, Government of India, plays a pivotal role in spearheading science and society programs in Assam. Beyond governmental support, Mr. Baruah emphasized ASTEC's pursuit of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding and collaborations with departments like Biotechnology. These efforts ensure sustained financial backing for ASTEC's initiatives and projects. While ASTEC primarily funds research rather than conducting it directly, Mr. Baruah discussed significant projects under the Research and Development Program.

This includes studies on climate change adaptation in 100 villages of Assam, aimed at developing resilient community models. Additionally, ASTEC contributes to biodiversity documentation through publications like "Land Diversity of Assam" and "Animal Diversity of Assam". Mr. Jaideep Baruah's insights into ASTEC's proactive outreach strategies and funding mechanisms underscore the council's commitment to bridging scientific advancements with societal needs.
