Her ambitious journey began three decades ago with an initial investment of just Rs. 500 and now she's earning in lakhs.
This year marks a special milestone for Waheeda Rehman and her brand as they celebrate 30 successful years in the jewellery business. Reflecting on this remarkable journey, Waheeda Rehman spoke exclusively to Business North East (BNE) about her passion, the evolution of her brand, and how she brought Assamese craftsmanship into the global spotlight.
"I was making jewellery that was not just decorative but told a story — the story of Assam my designs are inspired by the region's art, people, and history. It’s this personal connection to my heritage that sets my work apart." Waheeda Rehman told BNE reporter Sweata Das during an interview.
From her small beginnings, Waheeda Rehman Jewellery soon blossomed into a well-known name, garnering attention not just in India but across the world. Known for her intricate, handcrafted designs, Waheeda Rehman’s jewellery incorporates elements like muga silk, traditional motifs, and finely detailed metalwork, all showcasing the timeless beauty of Assamese craftsmanship.
Thirty years after starting with just Rs500, Waheeda Rehman’s brand is now recognized globally, with her creations adorning the collections of international fashion enthusiasts.
"It’s humbling to see people from all over the world embracing what I’ve created," the woman entrepreneur said and added, "The appreciation I’ve received, particularly from international clients, has been a major source of pride. It feels incredible to know that Assamese culture is being celebrated globally through my jewellery."
Her pieces have been featured in several international fashion events and are loved by customers in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. Waheeda Rehman’s blend of modern and traditional styles has made her jewellery highly sought after by a diverse clientele, from fashion-conscious youth to collectors of artisan craftsmanship.
One key aspect of Waheeda Rehman Jewellery is its commitment to being entirely handcrafted. Moreover, growing up in Assam, Waheeda Rehman was deeply inspired by the state’s intricate, age-old designs of Assamese bridal jewellery. With this connection to her roots, she began designing pieces that reflected the vibrant culture of the region. It wasn’t long before her creations began to catch the attention of the local market.
