Guwahati: Assam Water Resources Minister Piyush Hazarika visited the India-Bangladesh border sluice gate at Katigara in Cachar district, inspecting several gates, on Saturday. Six sluice gates, constructed by the Border Roads Organization, have been operated by the Water Resources Department since 2022.
During his visit, the minister inspected the Boleswar and Faiska sluice gates and informed locals about their operations. Of the 40 shutters, 33 are currently operational, while seven remain non-functional due to technical faults. Hazarika assured locals that the faulty shutters would be repaired after the monsoon season.
To ensure proper maintenance, the district administration will form six committees in the Katigara constituency. These committees will monitor the gates and report any issues to the Water Resources Department Engineer. The department will allocate Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 annually to each committee for the maintenance of the sluice gates. Hazarika directed the District Commissioner to form these committees promptly. Additionally, he visited Barkhola to inspect the erosion of the Jatinga River.
The development comes amid the ongoing flood crisis in Assam, which has so far killed over 100 people this year and damaged property worth crores.
