In a groundbreaking move, the government is establishing a semiconductor plant, which will generate 27,000 jobs for students in Assam and the entire northeastern region. During a one-day semiconductor awareness program held at Jagiroad College, Business North East spoke to Koushik Guha, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at NIT Silchar, who said that setting up a semiconductor plant will not only create opportunities for the youth of Assam but also contribute to the economic growth of India.
The academician discussed India’s focused efforts to become a global semiconductor hub and its impact on the Northeastern region. Speaking at a semiconductor ecosystem workshop at Jagiroad College, Koushik Guha shared that India’s investments in semiconductor technology are intensifying, with an emphasis on building domestic expertise and reducing reliance on imports.

Koushik Guha noted the growing attention being directed toward the Northeastern region by the Indian government and highlighted Tata’s decision to establish a semiconductor plant in the area, a development that is expected to greatly benefit young researchers and job-seekers across multiple fields. “This is not just for engineering,” he said and further added that the plant’s operations, by-products, and related opportunities will create jobs across various domains, benefiting students from engineering, arts, commerce, and beyond.
He called this project a ‘dream come true’ for Assam and the Northeast, with the semiconductor plant expected to launch in two years, providing significant opportunities for the region's next generation and supporting India's push to establish itself as a leader in the global semiconductor industry.
