Guwahati: Assam's staple 'kaji nemu' (Citrus Lemon) is likely to gain a firmer foothold in the global market as it is now being recognized as the state fruit.

This decision was announced by Agriculture Minister Atul Bora during a recent state assembly session.

Kaji nemu has long been celebrated for its distinctive aroma and multifaceted health benefits. Boasting a coveted Geographical Indication (GI) tag since 2016, the fruit has already secured a foothold in both domestic and international markets, with exports extending to regions as far-reaching as the Middle East and London. As of December 2023, Assam has exported 5,000 lemons to London.

Bora shed light on the commercial cultivation of Kaji Nemu, revealing that 15.90 hectares of land are dedicated to its production, yielding approximately 1.58 metric tonnes. Highlighting its export potential, Bora emphasized the fruit's pivotal role in diversifying Assam's agricultural portfolio and enhancing its global visibility.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the decision as a monumental step towards positioning the kaji nemu as a frontrunner in the global fruit market. Citing its unparalleled aroma and antioxidant properties, Sarma expressed optimism about the fruit's ability to enrich local cuisines while capturing the imagination of international consumers.

Finance Minister Ajanta Neog echoed similar sentiments, affirming Kaji Nemu's place on the global stage and predicting a surge in demand fueled by its unique attributes. With its recognition as the state fruit, Neog envisioned a trajectory of sustained growth for Assam's citrus industry.

The declaration received widespread acclaim across various sectors, with Minister of Housing Affairs, Ashok Singhal, lauding its potential to catalyze growth within the horticultural community.

In light of these developments, stakeholders too anticipate a surge in investments and initiatives aimed at bolstering the production and marketing infrastructure for kaji nemu.
