Guwahati: Liquor worth over Rs 7,000 crores has been sold in Assam within the last two years, the state’s Excise Minister, Parimal Suklabaidya, revealed during a recent discussion in the Assembly.
Assam currently has 1,707 foreign liquor shops, 923 Indian-made foreign liquor shops, and 374 country spirit shops, Suklabaidya said while responding to a query by Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, who is an independent.
While the state government collected Rs 3980 crore from liquor sales in 2022–23, 2023–24 saw collections amounting to Rs 3816 crore. Over the last five years, Assam has collected Rs 16,428 crore through liquor sales, Suklabidya informed the House.
Prices of liquor increased in Assam last year, in July, as the state government introduced new regulations aimed at increasing revenue. Tariffs were also increased from 4% to 25%. The sale of alcoholic beverages in shopping malls was also permitted last year.
