Guwahati: More than 5.30 lakh bulk litres (BL) of liquor are sold daily on average in Assam, which includes India Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), beer, and country spirits, stated Assam's Excise Minister Parimal Suklabaidya during the Assembly.
The minister said that, over Rs 10 crore is earned as excise revenue per day from the sale of liquor. The daily average sale of India Made Foreign Liquor is approximately 3,06,772.577 BL. About 1,66,589.883 BL of beer is sold on average per day. The daily sale of country spirits amounts to around 57,818.365 BL.
In the previous financial year, Assam generated an average daily revenue of Rs 10.85 crore from excise.
Assam has issued licenses for 1,684 wine shops and 896 bars in the state. These licenses are distributed based on requirements, with a focus on urban areas and areas near inter-state borders to curb liquor smuggling, mentioned the minister.
Except for allowing bar-cum-restaurants in tourist resorts, no additional licenses for wine shops or bars are being issued in rural areas at the moment. The state also has 486 country spirit shops, contributing to its overall liquor sales and excise revenue.
As of August in the current fiscal year, Assam has earned Rs 1,718.75 crore in excise revenue, minister added.
