Dispur: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on November 28, 2024, inspected the ongoing construction work of the Guwahati-North Guwahati Bridge over the Brahmaputra River, a significant infrastructural project with an investment of Rs 3000 crore. This makes the bridge the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken by the Assam state government. Once completed, it will transform the connectivity between the North and South banks of the Brahmaputra River.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, accompanied by senior government officials, boarded a ship to take a comprehensive look at the bridge’s progress. During his inspection, he reviewed the entire length of the bridge, including its pillars, and interacted with engineers from the Construction Company as well as officials from the Public Works Department (PWD). The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction with the pace of construction and assured that the project is on track to be completed by July 2025.
“The construction work is progressing smoothly, and we are committed to completing this ambitious project on time. The Guwahati-North Guwahati Bridge will be a game-changer in terms of connectivity and will significantly reduce travel time between the two banks of the Brahmaputra,” the CM said. He also highlighted the bridge’s role in enhancing the overall infrastructure of Guwahati, which is poised to become a key economic hub in the region.

With a total cost of Rs 3000 crore, the Guwahati-North Guwahati Bridge will not only improve connectivity but is also expected to play a pivotal role in reducing traffic congestion in the city. The project is designed to cater to the growing transportation needs of Guwahati, which has seen rapid urbanization and development in recent years. The new bridge will ease the burden on existing infrastructure, provide smoother traffic flow, and promote economic growth by facilitating quicker transportation of goods and people.
The Chief Minister also discussed the technical aspects of the bridge’s construction with the engineers and emphasized the importance of quality and safety standards. “This project is one of the biggest infrastructural achievements of our government. It will provide long-term benefits to the people of Guwahati, and we are ensuring that every detail is handled with utmost care,” Himanta Biswa Sarma added.

Accompanying Sarma on the inspection were Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, Special Secretary of PWD (R) Chandan Sarma, Police Commissioner of Guwahati Diganta Borah, and other senior officials from the state government. The team took a thorough tour of the construction site and discussed progress and timelines with the project contractors.
The Guwahati-North Guwahati Bridge is expected to be completed in phases, with the goal of reducing bottlenecks and improving overall transportation efficiency. Once operational, it will provide a much-needed alternative route for commuters, benefiting thousands of daily travellers and boosting the region’s economic prospects.
