Guwahati: The 2024 Assam Book Fair is ongoing at the Veterinary Field in Khanapara. With 118 book stalls offering a diverse range of literature, the event saw a stunning number of participants from various regions and a whopping Rs 6 crore turnover, breaking last year’s sales record as of the closing day, January 7 morning.
Business North East (BNE) spoke to Pramod Kalita, the Secretary of the Assam Publication Board, who shared his optimism about reaching Rs 7 crore in sales soon. These genres truly fascinated the audience and drove the enthusiasm we witnessed throughout the event, which started on December 27, 2024.
Around 5 lakh people visited the 2024 Book Fair. “The response has been inspiring. While it’s difficult to determine the exact number, the turnout underscores the public’s love for books and their eagerness to engage with the literary world,” Kalita said, speaking of the extended 12-day event.
As Assam embraces 2025 as the ‘Year of Books’, Kalita unveiled ambitious plans for the year ahead. “We plan to publish over 100 new books this year under the guidance of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Additionally, the Chief Minister has proposed organizing book fairs in every district, which we will execute to further promote the reading culture across the state,” he said.
