As climate change is having significant implications in the Asia-Pacific region, young people are playing a catalytic role in accelerating climatic action, gaining momentum not only in the Asia-Pacific region but also across the globe.

A recent report of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for ‘Climate Concern to Climate Action’, mentions names of social entrepreneurs across the world who are playing an important role in strengthening community resilience and taking action against climate change. The report mentions three entrepreneurs from India, including one from Assam- Encamp Adventures. The other two being GreenPod Labs and Urban Air Labs.

Encamp Adventures is a sustainable tourism startup. Ratan Kumar, 32, founded Encamp Adventures in 2018 with the vision to provide sustainable tourism given the Northeast region's abundance of natural resources.

Encamp Adventures was a part of the youth co-lab. Youth co:lab is co-created by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) which aims to establish a common agenda for countries in the Asia Pacific region to empower and invest in youth. Encamp Adventures was one of the seven finalists under the sustainable travel category.

The Assam-based start-up is a signatory to the ‘Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency’ initiative and is developing an automated carbon footprint calculator to enable the end-to-end measurement of carbon emissions from a travel itinerary.

“Encamp’s vision is to bring out a sustainable travel experience which is also at the same time hassle-free”, said Ratan while speaking to Business-Northeast.

If someone chooses to travel in a sustainable form the negative impact on the environment is less. The carbon emissions caused by sustainable travelling are comparatively very less as compared to regular travelling.

Encamp Adventures initially was an alternative accommodation company focused on providing individuals an option where they stay in a more eco-friendly way while they travel and in the process, they slowly evolved into a tour and travel company.

“We take care not only of the accommodation but also food, activities, local food culture and interaction in an eco-friendly way”, said Ratan.

Encamp adventures started with an initial investment of Rs.3 Lakh and with four core members.
