New Delhi: The Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav, a significant cultural and economic event, is set to enhance market connections for both retail and bulk supplies, according to R.K. Singh, Managing Director of the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC) Limited. Scheduled to take place at Bharat Mandapam from December 6-8 at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, this inaugural event aims to strengthen the cultural and economic ties of Northeast India.

NEHHDC, the event's implementing partner, is focusing on increasing the visibility and market potential of Northeastern products. R.K. Singh emphasized that the Mahotsav's primary goal is to showcase the rich diversity of the Northeast, particularly in the handloom and handicraft sectors.

“This event is not merely a showcase of local craftsmanship. It also aims to educate the public about the Northeast's potential in agriculture, horticulture, floriculture, and sericulture,” the NEHHDC Managing Director stated during an interview with Business North East (BNE). The Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav is designed to serve as a robust platform for business development.

"The government has made a significant effort to organize this event, which will facilitate connections for retail and bulk supplies on national and international levels," Singh remarked. He added that the Ministry of DoNER intends to make this event an annual occurrence, further broadening its reach and influence.

A standout feature of the Mahotsav will be the establishment of a Rural Haat, where more than 320 farmers, growers, and artisans will present their products, including vegetables, fruits, flowers, handicrafts, and handloom items. The marketplace will host a variety of entrepreneurs, start-ups, and self-help groups, offering a wide array of goods for attendees. The exhibition will also highlight the region’s signature products, such as Muga Silk and Eri Silk.

“The Eri Silk Pavilion will showcase creations from esteemed designers like Abraham & Thakore and Rahul Mishra, who are recognized for their commitment to sustainable fashion,” said a NEHHDC representative, who revealed Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma's wife Riniki Bhuyan’s curated Muga Silk Pavilion will feature her iconic 'Golden Threads' collection. An interactive experience and live demonstrations of the Muga silk production process will educate visitors about the intricate craftsmanship involving raw silk to finished products.

Alongside these pavilions, the Mahotsav will feature panel discussions on topics crucial to the region, including power, energy, IT, women's leadership, healthcare, education, and sports. These discussions will serve as a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among industry experts.

The event will also host a Buyer-Seller meeting to foster long-term business partnerships, facilitate over Rs. 2 crores in on-spot sales and secure over 50 bulk orders. This meet is designed to provide a unique opportunity for artisans to expand their market reach and connect with potential buyers from around the world.

Additionally, an Investor Round Table, organized in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), will be held to attract investments to the Northeast. The roundtable will highlight NE's unique products and potential for economic growth.

Moreover, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia recently launched the Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav website at Sanchar Bhawan in New Delhi. The website will serve as a hub for updates and information on the event, ensuring smooth coordination for participants and attendees.
