Cupertino: As per reports, Apple is reportedly planning to launch a connected health ring by 2026, positioning itself to compete with Samsung in the wearable health technology market. This would mark the first new product from the tech giant since the introduction of the Apple Vision Pro headset earlier this year.
Reportedly, the firm’s chief analyst, emphasized the significance of health in Apple's product strategy. He stated on CNBC's Beyond the Valley podcast, “Health has become a fundamental pillar for Apple. I believe that when Tim Cook decides to step down, one of his major legacies will revolve around personal health.” Wood noted Cook's personal investment in health technologies and suggested that a smart ring would be a valuable addition to Apple’s product lineup.
Additionally, Apple's current focus on health is evident in devices like the Apple Watch, which features various health sensors, and the latest AirPods Pro 2, which can function as hearing aids. Similar to smartwatches, a smart ring could incorporate various sensors to monitor health metrics, including heart rate.
Oura has been a leader in the smart ring space, but Samsung recently introduced its Galaxy Ring, aiming to broaden its health-focused product range. Priced at $399, the Galaxy Ring enhances Samsung's diverse portfolio, which includes smartphones and smartwatches, thereby encouraging user retention within its ecosystem.
Apple employs a similar strategy by offering an integrated suite of products designed to keep customers within its ecosystem. Wood mentioned that adding a health ring would enhance Apple’s existing lineup.
However, selling rings presents unique challenges due to the variability in finger sizes. Samsung addresses this by offering a variety of sizes and colors, providing customers with a sample size kit prior to purchase. Apple, on the other hand, boasts a significant and stylish retail presence that could facilitate the sale of a ring product. Wood pointed out, "Their retail footprint is ideally suited for this, as rings are complex products to bring to market."
Rings also serve as fashion accessories, and Wood believes that Apple’s products carry a certain prestige. He remarked, “Apple is a brand that people are proud to associate with. A beautifully designed ring from Apple could become a status symbol.”
Overall, if Apple successfully enters the smart ring market, it could further solidify its position in the health technology sector and attract new customers.
