New Delhi: Reliance Jio Infocomm, ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) which starts on Friday, has launched a new budget-friendly broadband plan priced at Rs. 198 per month. The plan offers unlimited data at 10 Mbps and unlimited landline voice calls, and is targeted at households with unreliable broadband connections who require a backup connection.
The plan is expected to further escalate the competition in the telecom sector, as it effectively cuts entry-level rates in half. Jio's current broadband plan starts at Rs. 399 per month with unlimited data at 30 Mbps speeds, while Bharti Airtel's plan starts at Rs. 499 with a speed of 40 Mbps.
The new Jio plan has upgrade options to higher speeds with 1, 2, and 7-day options. In addition, subscribers can opt to get live TV channels, OTT platforms, and gaming apps for an additional Rs. 100-200 a month.
Analysts predict that the new plan could enhance the IPL viewing experience in households with smart TVs, potentially beating out Disney Star which holds the terrestrial rights for the tournament. Jio is already offering users free streaming of IPL on the JioCinema app, and this new broadband plan is expected to further capture viewers. The plan is available for a minimum of five months at Rs. 1,490, which includes Rs. 500 for installation charges.
